  • How do I enroll in the TALE Academy?
The TALE Academy is launching in phases with all modules available in May 2023. Learners can enroll by visiting the Start Learning page on this website. You can also subscribe to our mailing list to receive notifications about future TALE Academy releases and news.
  • How is the TALE Academy structured?
The Academy offers 7 modules. Each module consists of 8-10 sessions, and each session takes approximately 1 hour to complete. The Academy offers a variety of ways to engage in the content using your preferred modality – written resources, podcasts, and videos. All sessions also offer engaging activities that foster the application of the content, including games, self-assessments, reflection activities, skill-building exercises, and time to action plan and make adjustments to your lesson plans. At the same time, the TALE Academy always follows a consistent learning path. Every session contains the same sequence, guiding you through an engaging yet predictable learning experience. Participants may complete any or all modules in any order, with the exception of Module 1: Shifting to Teaching Across Learning Environments. The first module is foundational content that must be completed before starting Modules 2-7.
  • What topics are covered in the Academy?
The seven TALE Academy modules are: Shifting to Teaching Across Learning Environments (TALE) Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Across Learning Environments Meeting the Needs of Students with Disabilities Across Learning Environments Meeting the Needs of English Language Learners/Multi-Language Learners Across Learning Environments Family & Community Engagement Across Learning Environments Social Emotional Learning Across Learning Environments Leading to Support Educators Across Learning Environments
  • What is the time commitment for the Academy? Can I complete it at my own pace?
The TALE Academy is entirely virtual, self-directed, and asynchronous. You can start and stop your learning journey in the Academy at any time, and your progress will be saved. The academy consists of 7 modules. Each module will take you 8-10 hours to complete. If a learner were to complete a module by taking 2 sessions per week (approximately 2 hours per week), then the learner would complete an 8-session module in 1 month’s time. The goal of the TALE Academy is to offer a rich learning experience that suits your schedule!
  • Can I take the course with my peers or as a school-wide initiative?
The TALE Academy is designed to be self-directed and asynchronous. In the future, NYSED will be training CTLE providers across the state to deliver the content in customized formats. These CTLE providers will be able to facilitate in-person, remote, and hybrid versions of the learning experiences. Subscribe to our mailing list to receive notifications about TALE Academy releases and news.
  • How can I learn how to use Canvas to take TALE Academy modules?
You don’t need prior experience with Canvas to easily navigate the TALE Academy. You will create a Canvas account during enrollment (start learning here!). To learn more about Canvas, please view the Canvas Overview on the Getting Started page of the TALE Academy website. Note: You do not need a webcam or any specific programs or software to participate.
  • Will I receive CTLE credit for completing modules within the TALE Academy?
Yes. Each successfully completed session offers you the opportunity to receive 1 to 1.5 CTLE units. To receive CTLE credit for a session, you must pass the CTLE quiz at the end of the session. Passing the CTLE quiz is also how you advance to the next session in a module. If you are completing a TALE Academy session as part of our Academy pilot, you will receive your CTLE certificate via email from Measurement Incorporated, the CTLE sponsoring organization for the TALE Academy during the pilot. Following the pilot of Module 1 in January 2023, and upon successful completion of all quizzes, all learners will receive CTLEs through Canvas - the learning management system.
  • How do I earn a micro-credential?
After completing a module, learners will also have the opportunity to earn micro-credentials. (Note: Micro-credentials are not available for participants of the TALE Academy pilot test.) Micro-credentials are awarded for the demonstration of applied skills and knowledge. To help you prepare for earning a micro-credential, each TALE Academy session includes an optional activity to start building your portfolio of applied learning. The learner then submits evidence to demonstrate competence in a specific skill. Once educators submit evidence, it goes through a double-blind assessment process by subject matter experts; this process takes up to 14 business days to complete. Educators will have multiple opportunities to make revisions to their submissions, if needed, based on feedback from reviewers. A micro-credential, in the form of a digital badge, will be awarded when the issuing organization determines that the submission meets the scoring guide and rubric requirements. Once earned, micro-credentials can be shared through social networks, embedded in websites or learning management systems, emailed to colleagues, and downloaded as digital badges. For additional information on micro-credentials, please visit microcredentials.freshdesk.com/support/home.
